What is already open
Although the permanent exhibition on a thousand years of Polish history will be ready in 2027, the monumental building of the Polish History Museum is already open to visitors. You can see temporary exhibitions, go up to the observation deck with a panorama of the Citadel and the surroundings, and use the park around it.
A standard ticket costs 20 zł, reduced 10 zł, and entry is free on Fridays. The museum is open Wednesday to Friday 10:00-18:00 and weekends until 19:00.
What to expect right now
At this stage the strongest points are the architecture of the new building, the temporary exhibitions and the observation deck, which offers a panorama of the Citadel and its surroundings. It is a good chance to see the building before the full permanent exhibition opens in 2027.
There is also park space around the museum, so the visit is easy to combine with a walk. The range of temporary exhibitions varies, so it is worth checking what is on before you arrive.
Is it worth it already?
If you are interested in temporary exhibitions, or want to combine the visit with the other Citadel museums and a walk in the park - definitely yes. If you want the full, permanent story of Polish history, it is worth returning after 2027.
It works well to treat the Polish History Museum as an introductory point - broad context, the deck and the architecture - and to find the deeper, more personal themes next door in the Tenth Pavilion and the Katyn Museum.
How to plan your visit
Remember the museum opens on Wednesday, so plan another point for Mondays and Tuesdays. Friday is a good choice if you want free entry, but expect bigger crowds.
Allow roughly two to three hours for the temporary exhibitions, the deck and the park, and confirm prices and hours before you set out, as they can be updated.
