When is entry to the Citadel museums free?

Several Citadel museums can be visited without a ticket. Plan around a free-admission day and you can see more than one exhibition for nothing.

The Katyn Museum - always free

The Katyn Museum charges no admission, all week. It is the only museum in the world devoted entirely to the Katyn massacre - a moving place worth visiting calmly and with due quiet, rather than treating it as another box to tick.

Since entry here is always free, it makes a good anchor for a no-cost visit to the Citadel - regardless of the day of the week.

Free-admission days at the other museums

The Polish History Museum offers free entry on Fridays. The Polish Army Museum and the Tenth Pavilion are free on Thursdays. This is a standing part of the offer, but details can change, so it is worth confirming before you visit.

Remember that the museums are closed on Mondays, and the Polish History Museum is also closed on Tuesdays. Free days tend to be busier, so come early if you want a calmer visit.

Thursday - the most for free in one day

If you want the maximum without paying, the strongest day is Thursday: the Polish Army Museum and the Tenth Pavilion are free, and the Katyn Museum is free anyway. In a single day you can therefore see several exhibitions at no cost.

That is a lot of material for one afternoon, so pace yourself - two exhibitions seen calmly give more than three rushed.

The grounds and park are always free

Regardless of the museum free days, the Citadel grounds and the Moat and Slopes park are open and free of charge. The gates, ramparts and open-air memorial sites can be seen at any time, including when the exhibitions are closed.

So even a visit without a single ticket can be worthwhile - a walk across the fortress and a pause at the Execution Gate are an essential part of the Citadel experience.

How to plan a no-cost visit

The simplest approach is to match your visit day to the free day of your chosen museum, add the always-free Katyn Museum, and round out the programme with a walk. Come early, as free days draw more visitors, and check the last-entry times so you do not arrive at closing doors.

Confirm the current days and hours before you set out - prices and entry rules can change, and a plan based on fresh information saves surprises on site.
