The Warsaw Citadel in winter and rain — what to do
The Citadel is not only an open-air walk. When it rains or is cold, shift the weight of your visit indoors — the museums offer several hours of programme under cover.

Lean on the interiors
In poorer weather, plan the day around the indoor exhibitions. Large museums comfortably fill several hours without going out into the rain, and you can move between them in short stretches.
Check hours and closing days in advance — they can be shorter in winter, and Monday is a common day off from visiting.
Dress in layers and keep outdoor stretches short
The grounds are large, so in winter layers and comfortable shoes make a difference. Keep the outdoor stretches to a minimum and treat them as transitions between interiors.
If you have children with you, plan warmer breaks and do not stretch the walk by force.
Which museums work best in the rain
The most time under cover comes from the large indoor exhibitions - the Polish History Museum and the Polish Army Museum, where you can spend several hours regardless of the weather. Add the more intimate Tenth Pavilion and Katyn Museum if you have the energy for the harder subjects.
Remember that part of the Polish Army Museum is an open-air exhibition - in heavy rain leave it for a better day and focus on the galleries.
Winter and rain have their upsides
Off-season and in poorer weather it tends to be less crowded, so the exhibitions are easier to see calmly and at your own pace. The stark winter scenery of the fortifications also has its own atmosphere, appreciated especially by photographers.
Check the current hours before you go - they can be shorter off-season - and keep a backup plan in case the weather turns badly.
